Community Empowerment Unit
Since July 2002, the College opened its doors, even wider, to members of its immediate community under its Community Empowerment Unit. The unit focuses primarily on training members of the community for the job market as well as to be micro-entrepreneurs. On a small scale students are also prepared for integration into other academic programmes.
Other key components of the programme are:
- Two – six weeks Work Experience
- Health and self- awareness workshops
- Entrepreneurial training
Funding for the operation of this Unit come from the host organization, Excelsior Community College, and the Peace Management Initiative (PMI), however the Unit welcomes assistance from other organization wishing to make contributions.
Objectives of the Unit
- Provide life skills among adults
- Provide more employable citizens
- Provide more entrepreneurs
- Provide training opportunities in personal development, career guidance, interpersonal skills
- Provide training for young people capable of gaining jobs in the technical fields
- Provide help for misguided young people by harnessing potential in a positive direction
